About the role

CAIR-SFBA is seeking a passionate and talented Deputy Executive Director to direct and supervise all administration and programming functions including overseeing the day-to-day operations, developing and implementing program strategies, building program and staff capacity, and ensuring organizational financial sustainability.  

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Executive Director will provide strategic vision and leadership, lead infrastructure development and programmatic oversight, and manage CAIR-SFBA’s dedicated and talented team. This position offers a unique opportunity to join the management team at one of the nation’s largest CAIR offices. 

The successful candidate will be a thoughtful leader who brings significant experience in program development, planning, and oversight; staff development; infrastructure and systems development; and finance, HR, and operations. 

Most importantly, they will be a skilled, strategic manager, and thought partner to the Executive Director, who can advance our priorities while inspiring, aligning, and supporting individual staff and teams to center the needs of our community with – courage, compassion, creativity, and concern for excellence. 

 

Schedule Type: Full-time (Exempt). Occasional evenings and weekends required. 

Location: Based in CAIR’s Santa Clara office. CAIR staff are currently working a hybrid schedule, with three days in-person and two days remote.  

Requirements: Ability to travel throughout the Bay Area (vehicle and driver’s license required); authorization to work in the United States.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Executive Director. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the organization and assume responsibility for directing the organization in the absence of the Executive Director 
  • Develop and implement an organization-wide approach to administrative and programmatic alignment  
  • Develop systems and methods for measuring and regularly evaluating the organization’s impact and progress against goals 
  • Coordinate with Executive Director and Operations team to develop annual priorities, monitor progress towards meeting the organization’s goals, and evaluate the performance of departments and programs 
  • Partner with the Executive Director to facilitate a vision-setting process with the management team and bring that vision to life through staff at all levels 
  • Facilitate strategic planning for the organization’s growth and ensure that organizational activities and programs are aligned  
  • Provide coaching and supervision of direct reports and support the coordination, development, and efficacy of individual staff, teams, and initiatives 
  • Plan for evolving staffing needs and recommend recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention practices aligned with our vision and values. Troubleshoot reassignment of duties and functions when staff transitions occur 
  • Support fundraising planning and implementation, including the development and maintenance of contacts with key funding sources, and collaborate with the Executive Director and Development team to achieve fundraising goals 
  • Maintain and enhance existing relationships and develop new strategic relationships with local Muslim communities, other community-based organizations and stakeholders, and interfaith leaders through coalition building 
  • Collaborate with CAIR-CA Executives on statewide programs and initiatives 
  • Participate in CAIR-SFBA’s Management Team, including regular meetings, advice to executives, and facilitation of organizational goals 

Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills. All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, and other office tasks. 

Required Qualifications 

  • At minimum five years of senior-level management experience, preferably in a nonprofit, social justice, advocacy, or public policy organization 
  • Alignment with CAIR’s mission, knowledge of the realities facing the American Muslim community, and a deep desire to work in an organization whose mission and culture are rooted in Islamic values, including justice, courage, and collaboration 
  • Experience assessing and scaling an organization, building infrastructure and efficiency; and overseeing, developing, aligning and evaluating programs 
  • Experience creating, investing in, uplifting, and managing individual staff and teams; strong, inclusive facilitation skills; experience building the leadership capacity of team members to innovate and achieve high impact 
  • Strong relationship builder and communicator who values equity and justice, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking experience 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with a high degree of professionalism and ability to interface with staff, community leaders, volunteers, legislators, government agencies, and other key stakeholders 
  • Emotionally intelligent with thoughtful and collaborative leadership style; an open mind and learning spirit 
  • Grounded while working in a fast-paced environment; track record of inspiring confidence internally and externally, excellent judgement, measured and operationally savvy 
  • Detail and process-oriented; willing to roll up their sleeves and do whatever it takes in a pinch; flexible. Can prioritize between and manage multiple demands 
  • Knowledge of cloud applications such as SharePoint, Office365, Quickbooks, and Asana; Basic computer proficiency including knowledge of MS Office, MS Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience working in Arab, Muslim, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian communities 
  • Experience working with a political action committee and/or a grassroots campaign 

Compensation 

  • Compensation in the range of $123,094-$138,464 commensurate with experience 
  • Fully paid Kaiser Health Insurance and Blue Cross PPO Dental Plan for employee and dependents 
  • 3% retirement matching contribution 
  • 10 paid holidays, 10 sick days, and 12 vacation days
