About company

We're a team of builders, united by our passion for simplifying the most complex industries and bettering experiences through enhanced technology. At Clasp, we're on a mission to power better benefits experiences and, in turn, enhance the lives of the very people who make up the backbone of our economy: the workforce.

With Clasp, SaaS platforms and brokers can design and launch a fully-featured, tailored benefits product in just a few weeks. Our APIs and embeddable UI help platforms set up in-product support for buying, enrolling, and administering benefits specific to their users.

About the role

In this role, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Reimagining benefits products: As one of our earliest engineers, you'll work directly with the founding team to define, architect, and build our core product from the ground up, giving you a chance to rethink and reenvision what a great benefits experience looks like. Your voice won't just be heard—it will be integral in all product and engineering decisions.

  • Building Clasp's technical foundations: Work we do today can make our future work better and more efficient. Since our product is tackling a complex problem, we’ll need to build a foundation that is flexible and allows us to adapt to a wide variety of product needs. By investing in our own productivity, we can get more done with less – we can work smarter.

  • Shaping the team: In this role, you will also play a crucial part in shaping our engineering culture and team. You'll have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers, contribute to hiring decisions, and foster a collaborative environment. By shaping our team dynamics and workflow, you'll help ensure that we can scale effectively and maintain a high bar for technical excellence and innovation.

Who are we looking for?

  • Full-stack versatility - While everyone on the team should be constantly learning, we’re looking for someone who is an expert at building JS apps and capable of bringing features from start to finish, including necessary backend and infrastructure work. We’re still early, so your expertise will play a big role in the architecture of the app. While these aren't hard requirements, expertise in React (TypeScript) and Django (Python) are added bonuses.

  • Moves Fast - As a startup in its early stages, we need find a balance between moving fast, and building for the long haul. We think the best way to do so is to minimize scope, prioritize ruthlessly, and implement rigorously so that we're building for the long haul. We're looking for someone who can do the same.

  • Shares Our Values - At Clasp, we believe it's important that our members share core common values. On the EPD (engineering, product, and design) side, here are some of our core values:

  • Strong opinions, loosely held - It is important to us that everyone forms an opinion and view on our goals, prioritizations, and decisions. With that said, open discussions and open-mindedness to new ideas are crucial at Clasp. Be ready to challenge and be challenged in the spirit of building the best possible product!
  • Be rigorous, be bold, and get it right - Just because something has been done a certain way in the past doesn't mean it can't be improved. As a team, we take both internal and external feedback seriously as an opportunity to make things better.
  • Never lose sight of the customer - Building a product for any complex industry is a deep field, and it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important. It's critical to constantly remind ourselves why we’re doing this – for our customers. As one of Clasp's earliest members, it will be crucial that you seek to put customers first whenever making a decision that affects them.
  • Strategic tech-debt - We view tech-debt as having a wide variety of “interest rates”. We’re OK with some low-interest tech-debt in the short-term if it lets us work smarter and build more value for our customers sooner, as long as we plan to pay it back over the mid-term.
