Virgil was founded in 2024 as a one-of-a-kind concept to provide unified support for VC-backed startups -- including Legal, Bookkeeping, Tax, Compliance, and People Operations. Virgil supports clients more holistically across various workstreams, to provide day-to-day support more efficiently and affordably than traditional law firms, and make it easier for founding teams to grow their business.
Founded by startup attorney, Luke Versweyveld (Founding CEO), Jeremy Howard (Founding Director, CEO of Answer.AI) and Eric Ries (Founding Director, creator of the Lean Startup and Long Term Stock Exchange), we have assembled an exceptionally talented team of lawyers, operators, and professional service providers who aren't afraid to embrace this new era of technology while maintaining the craft and judgment that high-stakes work demands.
Virgil was named after Dante's guide through hell and purgatory on his way to paradise in the Divine Comedy. It's our hyperbolic way of saying we'll be with clients every step of the way through the most hellacious parts of scaling their startup.
Do not apply if:
You think "that's how we've always done it" is a valid argument
You prefer working in silos rather than collaborating across disciplines
You need extensive hand-holding
You're looking for a traditional BigLaw experience with marble lobbies and stuffy conference rooms
You prefer theoretical legal analysis over practical business solutions
... but if you want in on the ground floor of a fundamental shift in how startups consume professional services, please reach out.
Virgil is seeking an attorney with 1-3+ years of experience to join its unique and innovative law firm serving VC-backed startup clients.
We are looking for candidates who learn quickly, enjoy working on a variety of matters each day, and are interested in changing the way startups consume legal services. This role will be client-facing from Day 1, providing precise and practical legal guidance to founders and their teams.
We understand that junior attorneys may not have all of the skills and experience to support clients on their own, and we provide informal and formal training to assist our attorneys, working closely across our practice areas.
This role is a unique combination of ECVC and Tech Transactions, with an additional focus on Legal Tech and Operations to improve how we innovate and serve our clients.
In this role, you will be supporting VC-backed startup clients on a variety of transactions and assisting in improving how we support clients:
Equity financings
Stock option plans
Formation
Cap table management
Board and shareholder consents
Hiring
Other miscellaneous corporate matters
Enterprise B2B contract drafting and negotiation
Partnership agreements
Privacy policies, terms of use, and other related terms
Counseling and licensing matters with respect to soft IP, including trademarks, copyrights, and software (including related to AI, open source, and other areas)
Miscellaneous research projects
Utilizing and testing various legal tech and AI tools to support our practice
Being a key contributor in thinking about improving practice and operations
Collaborating closely with our technology team to create tools that can support our law firm entity and our clients
This is a fully remote role.
License to practice in the U.S. is required. Although we are open to strong candidates in any U.S. jurisdiction, we have a preference for candidates who are licensed to practice in California and reside in the Pacific Time Zone.
